St. Peter Receiving Keys from Christ – Perugino

This classic Early Renaissance painting by Perugino shows Our Lord giving the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven to Saint Peter, as the other apostles look on. Jesus and the apostles stand at the foreground of a large piazza. Behind them, soldiers are engaged in swordplay and other men hold conversations with each other. A temple and two triumphal arches stand at the end of the square behind Jesus and the apostles. Trees and faraway hills make up the background landscape. Commissioned for the Sistine Chapel, this artwork demonstrates the Renaissance fascination with linear perspective, showcasing a wonderful illusion of distance and depth.
