A Closer Look - Tissot

This digitally-restored artwork, by nineteenth-century French painter and illustrator, Jacques Joseph Tissot, Anglicized as James Tissot, shows Christ sitting with His disciples on top of a mountain, when a Jewish doctor stands to try questioning Our Lord.

"And one of them, a doctor of the law, asking him, tempting him: 'Master, which is the greatest commandment in the law?' Jesus said to him: 'Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind.' " — Mt 22:35-37

The doctor stands in front of our Lord Jesus surrounded by His seated disciples while talking to the Jewish doctor.

The surrounding mountains are painted in different shades of brown and appear to be rocky mountains with different gray accents. Our Lord Jesus and His disciples are sitting on rocky ground in different shades of gray.

While the painting clearly features Our Lord Jesus, His disciples and the Jewish doctor, there are other people in the painting as well at the right section.
