Christ Carrying His Cross to Calvary, by Giampietrino

by Isabella Childs January 05, 2021

man of sorrows

This is a portrayal of Jesus Christ carrying the cross, by Northern Italian Renaissance painter, Giampietrino.

The image is a portrait of Christ, depicting only His upper body. Our Lord's body faces the right side of the painting and the Savior looks over His right shoulder towards the viewer of the painting with a pained expression on His face. Christ holds the cross with both hands, resting it on His left shoulder.

The Savior has pale skin, brown eyes, shoulder-length brown hair, and a beard. He wears a bright red cloak over His left shoulder and across His body, such that His right shoulder is bare. There is a crown of thorns on Christ’s head.

The background of the painting is dark brown.
