Pentecost

mary and disciples kneeling

This is a painting by Vivarini of the Holy Ghost descending upon Our Lady and the disciples at Pentecost.

The Blessed Mother kneels with the disciples in a large, arched room. God the Father and God the Son are shown on the ceiling. God the Father is depicted as an old man, with only His face visible. God the Holy Ghost is beneath God the Father on the ceiling, depicted as a dove. Light streams down from the Holy Ghost on the Virgin Mary.

Our Lady kneels in the center of the room. She wears a pale pink dress and a long blue veil. The Blessed Mother looks upwards at the Holy Ghost with folded hands.

The disciples kneel around Our Lady. They wear brightly colored robes and cloaks.

The disciples and the Blessed Mother have halos and flames above their heads.

There is a stone arch behind Our Lady and the apostles. Beyond the arch are a blue sky and some green hills.
