weeping nun

This is a portrait of Saint Catherine of Siena, by Dolci.

The great mystic is depicted wearing a black veil with a white coif and wimple. On her head is a crown of thorns.

St. Catherine is very pale. She looks downwards, her eyes half-closed. Her eyelids are pink. There is a tear on her left cheek.

The background of the painting is pale blue.
