St. Peter Invited to Walk on Water

by Isabella Childs December 30, 2020

Our Lord and disciple on sea

In this image, by French eighteenth-century painter Francois Boucher, Christ beckons to the apostle Peter on the water.

Saint Peter has just stepped out of the boat and onto the green waves, on the left side of the painting. He stands, only partially upright, and reaches desperately for the Savior's hand. Christ stands erect on the water facing Peter and stretches His hands out towards the frightened apostle.

Peter has gray hair and a beard. He wears a turquoise robe and a yellow cloak. Christ has light brown hair and a beard. He wears a pale red robe and a blue cloak.

Behind Peter, the other apostles are gathered in their fishing boat, looking on.

In the background of the painting, the sky is a bright blue with dark blue and white clouds. There are cherubs' heads in the clouds.
