The Sermon on the Mount

The Sermon on the Mount

This is an image of Jesus Christ’s Sermon on the Mount, taken from the altarpiece of St. Matthew’s Church in Copenhagen. This image shows only the middle part of the painting in Copenhagen.

In the image, Jesus stands atop some large yellow-brown rocks. The Savior has white skin, chin-length light brown hair, and a short beard. He wears a red robe and a blue cloak, which is draped over his left shoulder. Christ raises both arms in the air, pointing the index finger of his right hand upwards and gesturing  to His left with His left hand. Surrounding the Savior’s head is a halo of white light.

Groups of people stand behind Christ and on either side of the Savior.

Facing Jesus, on the left and the right side, are disciples dressed in robes which are mainly brown in color.

Behind the disciples, to the left of Christ, a man wearing a red garment and head covering looks over his right shoulder at the Savior with a malicious look on his face. To the right of the wicked man is a young woman wearing a light green dress and a red sash. The young woman clasps her hands and looks up at the Savior. To the right of the young woman behind Jesus is a group of three men and a woman. These people are mainly wearing brown.

In front of Christ in the left corner of the image, a woman holding a child looks up at the Savior. In front of Christ, in the right corner of the image, a man wearing a robe and a head covering faces the Savior.

The background of the image consists of a pale blue sky with a few white clouds in it. Also in the background is a light blue mountain range.
