Procession of St. Gregory in the Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome – Paolo

Pope St. Gregory the Great leads the people of Rome in penitential procession, begging God to pardon the Empire and rid it of the plague. St. Michael the Archangel stands atop the Mausoleum of Hadrian, sheathing his sword in signal that the plague is over. Looking up, the saintly Pope sees the apparition. Artwork by Paolo
