This is a portrait of Saint Anthony of Padua, a thirteenth-century Franciscan friar, who fought so strongly against heresy that he is honorably called "Malleus Hereticorum", "Hammer of the Heretics". St. Anthony is the patron saint of lost items, the poor, and travelers. He is depicted here as holding Our Lord in his arms, so that the Savior makes eye contact with the viewer of the painting, in order to symbolize the Saint's zeal which drew others to Christ. Artwork by Charles Bosseron Chambers.
