St. Peter's Liberation From Prison, Detail – Raphael

This is a detail from a fresco by Raphael, showing an angel busting Saint Peter, the first Pope, out of jail, while the prison guards sleep. This particular image, depicting the angel awakening Peter in prison, makes up the center of the fresco. On the right side of the fresco, the angel leads Peter down a staircase and out of prison. On the left side of the fresco, the soldiers awaken on the staircase outside Peter's cell and discover that the Apostle is gone.
