D. Ghirlandaio painted this inspirational artwork, showing Elizabeth kneeling in greeting before her cousin, the Virgin Mary. The artwork depicts the first meeting between the two women after their miraculous conceptions, the elderly Elizabeth with Saint John the Baptist, and the Blessed Mother with the Savior of the World. The two other figures present in the background are Mary of Cleophas (left), and Mary of Salome (right), as is indicated by the inscriptions above each of the women.
