This image, by the Master of the Pesaro Crucifix, depicts the story of Cecilia and her husband, Valerian. According to tradition, after Valerian was baptized, he saw Cecilia's guardian angel, who placed crowns of lilies and roses on the couple's heads as symbols of the life of virginal virtue the two would lead together until their martyrdom.
