Moses Breaking the Tablets – Dore

The old-testament prophet Moses is shown breaking the two stone tablets that had the 10 Commandments written on them. Moses had recently received these tablets from God on Mount Sinai, only to come down from the mountain and see his people worshiping a golden calf. Upset with the idolatry, he broke the tablets in a moment of anger, which is what we see here in the black and white image by artist G. Dore.
