Annunciation

This is a  fourteenth-century century Byzantine icon of the Archangel Gabriel asking the Virgin Mary to be the Mother of God. The angel's bright robes with their many wrinkles, his outspread wings, and his outstretched right hand all signify motion and urgency, while the Virgin's dark robes, seated position, and slightly raised right hand signify Mary's quiet submission to the Will of God.
