Christ With Mary and Martha – Vermeer

This artwork by J. Vermeer shows Jesus speaking to the sisters Martha and Mary Magdalene. Martha is considered to be a model of active life and Mary Magdalene a model of contemplative life, as suggested by this image.

The artwork was inspired by Lk. 10:41-42: "And the Lord answering, said to her: Martha, Martha, thou art careful, and art troubled about many things: But one thing is necessary. Mary hath chosen the best part, which shall not be taken away from her."
