Crowning of St. Cecilia of Rome and Her Husband Valerian – Master of the Pesaro Crucifix


This image, by the Master of the Pesaro Crucifix, depicts the story of Saint Cecilia and her husband, Valerian. According to tradition, after Valerian was baptized, he saw Cecilia's guardian angel, who placed crowns of lilies and roses on the couple's heads, as symbols of the life of virginal virtue the two would lead together until their martyrdom.
