This lovely Madonna and Child artwork, by fifteenth-century Italian painter, Filippo Lippi, is the artist's most famous painting. In the image, the Blessed Mother, dressed as a Florentine noblewoman, sits on a cushioned chair, with folded hands and eyes cast down, looking pensively and almost sorrowfully at her Son. The Christ Child sits, propped by the hands of an angel, and touching His Mother's shoulder. The golden-haired child-angel holding Christ looks towards the viewer of the painting, with a happy and slightly mischievous smile on his face. Another boy-angel looks on behind Christ. All the figures in the painting are gathered in front of a window. Beyond the window, the Italian countryside and a distant town are visible.
