Madonna of Humility – Dalmasio

In this fourteenth-century image of the Madonna and Child by Dalmasio, the Blessed Virgin holds the Infant Christ as He looks up at His Mother, holding her veil. Mary sits on grass, covered with bright flowers, which symbolize her virginity. There is a small crescent moon at her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head, denoting the Blessed Mother as the Woman of the Apocalypse foretold in Revelation 12:1. Mary and Christ sit in the glow of the large, yellow sun, with angels looking down at them from the sky above.
