This fresco, by Giotto, depicts the betrothal of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Joseph, according to the narration in The Golden Legend. According to the legend, Mary and other virgins dedicated to the Temple chose husbands from the men who were brought before them. Our Lady recognized Joseph to be her spouse from the staff he was carrying, which burst into bloom and had the Holy Ghost resting on it in the form of a dove.
