Saint Ramon, a Spanish thirteenth-century redeemer of slaves in the Order of Mercy, is pictured here surrounded by ransomed slaves, with a padlock on his lips. The saint suffered many tortures in his efforts to free slaves in Algeria before he finally died in Spain while travelling to Rome in obedience to the Pope. Ramon was born via caesarean operation, hence his title "nonato" – "not born". Artwork by Carducho.
