Martyrdom of Saint Apollonia – Reni

This artwork by Guido Reni depicts the martyrdom of St. Apollonia, a deaconess of Alexandria in the third century. As portrayed in this image, the holy woman's teeth were broken before she chose to perish by fire instead of renouncing the Christian Faith. St. Apollonia is the patroness of dentists and those with tooth troubles.
