Our Lady at the Cross

The Apostle St. John stands next to Mother Mary to comfort her. The intent of the artist, in this case, could have very well been to paint the moment when Our Lord spoke from the Cross: "When Jesus therefore had seen his mother and the disciple standing whom he loved, he saith to his mother: Woman, behold thy son. After that, he saith to the disciple: Behold thy mother." John 19:26-7
