This is a portrait by Raphael of Pope Julius II, who was head of the Catholic Church from 1503 to 1513, and is known as "The Warrior Pope" for his political work in gaining control of the Papal States. Pope Julius was also the Pope who best promoted the arts. He is famous for commissioning the construction of St. Peter's Basilica.
