This is an antique portrait of Pope Leo XIII, who was born Vincenzo Gioacchino Raffaele Luigi Pecci to an Italian comital family, and ruled as Pope from 1878 to 1903. During his long papacy, Leo XIII restored the influence of the Church, speaking against Modernism and advocating for social reform during the time of Communism's spread. The Pope also wrote on Marian devotion and composed the Prayer to St. Michael, to be prayed after each Mass. The figures and symbols surrounding the portrait reflect the works which Pope Leo XIII accomplished.
