St. Barbara – Campin

This fifteenth-century Flemish painting by Robert Campin shows Saint Barbara studying the Scriptures indoors while her father's men construct a building outside according to Barbara's orders, just as the virgin's father rides home. According to the story of the saint's life, Barbara's father became so enraged when he discovered that his daughter had ordered the placement of three windows instead of two in his new building, in honor of the Triune God, that he himself martyred Saint Barbara for her Christian Faith.
