This portrait of St. Charles Borromeo devoutly meditating on the crucifix is by Tiepolo. Saint Charles Borromeo was the Archbishop of Milan, then Cardinal, then Secretary of State under Pope Pius IV. He is known for encouraging the Council of Trent and for reforming the entire city of Milan. Charles is also famous for aiding the suffering during the great plague that broke out in Milan in the sixteenth century. St. Charles Borromeo is the Patron of Bishops, Cardinals, Seminarians, and Spiritual Leaders.
