St. Hugh of Grenoble

This is a portrait of Saint Hugh, the Medieval Bishop of Grenoble. Saint Hugh is impressive because even after he became overwhelmed by his responsibilities of reform, he left the monastery to which he had retired at the Pope's command and resumed the duties of Bishop. St. Hugh famously enabled the founding of the Carthusian Order when he gave St. Bruno land on which to found the first Carthusian monastery. St. Hugh is pictured here in a Carthusian habit and with his crozier in his hand.
