S. Botticelli painted this image of the martyr, Saint Sebastian.
Initially, the Roman emperor Diocletian had Sebastian shot full of arrows and left for dead. However, Sebastian was nursed back to health, after which resuming his activities of calling out the emperor for his wickedness. That time around, Diocletian had Sebastian beaten to death and thrown down into a privy. Sebastian's remains were recovered by Christians and buried in the catacombs.
